I have a question about forms. In the show I am working on, I want to be able to make a set that looks like a drawing or picture. Is there any way to superimpose an image onto the field that does not completely cover the canvas, so that I may create the form to outline that image?

No, there is no way to make a smaller image on the field in the way you are suggesting but you do have a couple options. The most obvious way do to it would be to create a prop that is right right width and depth but very short (0.01). Then you can add an image to the top of the prop and draw the form over top of it. Remember that you can also resize most forms once they are drawn to scale to the proportion that you need.
